Pre-order
by February 28
|
|
|
Did you know that cancer is the
#1 cause of death in adult dogs? It’s also a leading
health concern of dog owners. So how is cancer addressed by the
veterinary profession, and what kind of market is there for veterinary cancer
therapies?
Brakke
Consulting’s new 2025
Cancer in Dogs and Cats report includes information on the
incidence, diagnosis, and treatment of the common veterinary cancers. It
covers currently approved veterinary therapies and those in development, as
well as estimates of the numbers of pets treated.
The study
includes a survey of 300 general veterinary practitioners about incidence of
cancer and frequency of treatment; as well as a survey of 1,000 pet owners to
determine what they are willing to pay to treat a pet with cancer.
The report
is available for pre-order for $7,995 until February 28, and $8,500 thereafter.
The report will be published in March. For more information, please contact Dr.
Lynn Fondon at info@brakkeconsulting.com .

Animal Health News - SCOTLAND
Research – led by the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus
Research, in collaboration with an international team of scientists – has shown
that horses have been infected with H5N1 avian influenza in Asia and that
infections have been occurring in horses undetected. The results are published
in the journal Emerging Infectious
Diseases. (Vet Advantage - Paulick report)
- US - AVIAN INFLUENZA The FDA has determined that it is necessary
for manufacturers of cat and dog foods who are covered by the FDA Food Safety
Modernization Act Preventive Controls for Animal Food (PCAF) rule and using
uncooked or unpasteurized materials derived from poultry or cattle (e.g.,
uncooked meat, unpasteurized milk or unpasteurized eggs) to reanalyze their
food safety plans to include Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza virus
(specifically H5N1) as a known or reasonably foreseeable hazard. The reanalysis
is necessary to respond to the recent domestic cat illnesses and deaths from
H5N1 and to scientific data indicating that cats and dogs have become ill from
consuming H5N1 virus. (FDA)
- US - ANIMAL FEED REGULATION The Association
of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) membership voted on a new regulatory
pathway for animal food ingredients, approving Kansas State University Olathe
Innovation Campus’s proposal. Through the pathway, the university will provide
scientific review for new ingredient submissions for use in pet food and animal
feed. The new pathway replaces AAFCO’s Memorandum of Understanding with the US
FDA, which expired in October 2024. (Petfood Processing)

Brakke Consulting Viewpoint
Last
week, the annual JP Morgan annual healthcare conference concluded. Many of the top human and animal health
companies presented their future visions to the investing community. Zoetis and Elanco were front and center and
Merck mentioned its animal health business as part of its human health
presentation.
I
took a few minutes to look at the pipeline focus and products highlighted in
these presentations. The pipelines are
heavily concentrated on the companion animal segment. Therapeutic areas of focus in the pipelines
include osteoarthritis/pain, renal disease, oncology, cardiology, dermatology
and the next generation of parasiticides.
Many of the pipeline products are monoclonal antibodies, injectable
products and focused on long-acting formulations. What does this mean for the livestock
segment? Maybe it’s just a lack of
visibility into livestock pipeline products but it certainly seems that the
R&D focus is on the segment of the market providing the highest growth
rates.
It
will be interesting to see how the overall market evolves with the next wave of
innovation. These new therapies that are
primarily delivered via injections will drive patients back to the veterinary
clinic. Will there be a bifurcation of
the prescription market with Chewy/Amazon/PetMeds focusing on oral prescription
and OTC products and veterinarians focusing on injectables and vaccines?
We
will talk about innovation at the Brakke Consulting annual Industry Overview
presentation at both VMX and WVC – hope to see you there.
